Germany consider ban on wheat imports from USA

German Ministry of Food and Agriculture consider introducing a ban on wheat imports from USA after finding of genetically modified corn. In July, USA informed the European Commission (EC) that non-agricultural area in Washington state were found 22 genetically modified varieties of wheat. The found wheat varieties are resistant to herbicides based on glyphosate as Roundup, which is owned by Monasnto – one of the largest producers of seeds and herbicides.

In an interview with the German newspaper Der Spiegel, the spokesman of German Ministry of Food and Agriculture notes that the EC has asked the US authorities to send the results of further testing genetic variations found in wheat.

According to the German Ministry of Food and Agriculture, imports of US wheat in Germany greatly reduced in recent years. In 2013 Germany has paid around 26,200 tons, while in 2015 imports decreased to about 514 tons.
